Gilang Damar
Gilang Damar Setiadi is a researcher and musician who was born in Yogyakarta, 1990. He lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Have a research interest and focus on working on human interaction with nature and the environment, along with the accompanying impacts. Later worked on research and archiving of traditional music in Indonesia, as well as the development of contemporary Indonesian music and culture for the global scene with Volcanic Winds.
As a musician, he began experimenting with drums, noise, and objects that could be used as raw percussion media. Releasing his first album “Modern Apocalyptism” in 2017, also a split album with Will Guthrie, “Tabuhan” in 2018. His collaboration with other experimental musicians also resulted in releases released by several local and international labels, such as Bulog, South East Asia Three Way Split, and others. He is also involved in the inter-galactic experimental music project, ASU (USA). In 2014 together with Rully Shabara and several other musicians restarted the Kombo, which was a platform for developing an improvised music scene.
His background as a researcher and musician brought him often active in experimental music discussions in several areas both in Indonesia and abroad.
In terms of interdisciplinary collaboration Gilang has worked with several groups of artists and researchers in Southeast Asia and Japan in a project called Art For Resilient Communities, a project focused on strengthening community resilience in disaster-prone areas with participatory art and media.
